Practical training for students, organized by the Department of International Economic Relations
On December 12, 2025, the Department of International Economic Relations, together with the Alumni Club IER, organized a practical training on the topic "Opportunities for applying for a job for young people up to 29 years of age" with lecturer Sofia Vergilova-Georgieva, Head of the Department of Active Labor Market Policy at the Labor Bureau - Svishtov. At the opening of the event, Assoc. Prof. Dragomir Iliev, Head of the Department of International Economic Relations, introduced Sofia Vergilova-Georgieva to the attending students and members of the academic staff of the department: she graduated with a bachelor's degree in International Economic Relations in 2011, and in 2017 she successfully defended her educational and scientific PhD degree in the specialty "World Economy and International Economic Relations". Sofia has been a full member of the Alumni Club IER since its founding (the year of graduation of her class), and actively participates in conducting various events to increase the capacity of students, including student recruitment and career development.

Dr. Vergilova-Georgieva made a presentation to second and third year students on the opportunities for finding a job through employment offices, and more specifically the conditions under the Youth Internships Project, funded by the Human Resources Development Program 2021-2027, co-financed by the European Union through the European Social Fund +. The goal of the program is to include thousands of young people in internships with employers across the country, as young people will be hired under fixed-term employment contracts, will have mentors who will train them on the job, and will receive pay, transportation allowances and the opportunity for a recommendation and a further employment contract. The program can include:
- Students who want to work in their free time;
- Unemployed young people up to 29 years of age (inclusive);
- Inactive young people;
- People without experience, but with a desire to start a job and develop.

According to Dr. Vergilova-Georgieva, the interest of employers in this program is great, but there are still untapped opportunities for employment. In the ensuing discussion, the students shared personal experiences with relatives who have been employed under this program, and asked specific questions about the application conditions, the points of contact with the Student Internship program, and the opportunities for work abroad.
The event is part of the scientific calendar of the Department of International Economic Relations for 2025.
